Dental veneers, also known as porcelain veneers or dental laminates, are thin shells of tooth-colored porcelain or composite resin that are custom-made to fit over the front surface of a tooth. Veneers are designed to improve the appearance of teeth that are discolored, misshapen, chipped, or have gaps between them.

The procedure for dental veneers typically involves the following steps:

Consultation and evaluation

The dentist will evaluate the patient’s teeth and discuss their goals and expectations for the treatment. This may involve taking x-rays or making impressions of the teeth.

Preparation

The dentist will prepare the tooth by removing a small amount of enamel from the front surface. This creates space for the veneer to fit comfortably and naturally over the tooth.

Impression

The dentist will make an impression of the prepared tooth, which is sent to a dental laboratory where the veneer will be custom-made to fit the tooth.

Temporary veneer

A temporary veneer may be placed on the tooth to protect it while the permanent veneer is being made.

Bonding

Once the permanent veneer is ready, the dentist will bond it to the tooth using a special dental cement. The veneer is then hardened using a special light.

Dental patients may choose veneers for several reasons, including:

  • Improving the appearance of teeth that are discolored or stained and cannot be improved by teeth whitening treatments.
  • Correcting the appearance of teeth that are chipped, cracked, or misshapen.
  • Closing gaps between teeth.
  • Lengthening teeth that are too short.
  • Correcting minor bite problems.
  • Replacing old, worn dental restorations such as dental crowns or fillings.

It’s important to note that veneers are a permanent cosmetic dental treatment and require proper care and maintenance to ensure their longevity. Patients should follow good oral hygiene practices, including regular brushing and flossing, and avoid biting on hard objects or using their teeth as tools.
